In all of the arts, form often shows itself in a dualistic way. It is the selection of detail on the one hand, and the rejection of it on the other. Perhaps form is binary. Creativity lies in the discernment of when this balancing act works best. Art-making carefully considers the relationship of all the parts that constitute the whole form. Good design requires a balance between entities of unity and variety, symmetry and asymmetry, movement and repose, and so on. A good work may be one that exhibits a continuity of tensions that keeps stimulating our senses, drawing us back to the work—again and again.
