The phenomenon of online auctions has changed the very nature of collecting and selling, giving the pursuer a window on eclectic and rarified objects amassed for review, and the ability to purchase in ways previously not conceived. The premier twenty-first century flea market—eBay—boasts more than two million members who wander among millions of items for sale, often for the mere pleasure of looking. It has opened up a truly global marketplace for goods. It also paved the way for many other sites, from Craigslist, an online classified ad site, to thousands of imitators. It allows any individual to compete with brick and mortar stores, and so has changed the face of commerce around the world.
