Pythagoras regarded numbers and shapes in themselves as holy (as do many religions, such as Hinduism and Christianity), especially the Tetraktys of the decad, a triangle made up of ten dots. An emphasis on number led to several well-known geometric theories, including the Pythagorean triangle and the Harmony of the Spheres, the notion that the planets were arranged in the heavens based on musical harmonies and intervals. Shortly after Pythagoras, Plato developed the concept of an enduring form, which gives an object its identity. These forms were permanent and unchanging—unlike matter, which was unstable—and existed in a spiritual realm independent of their physical manifestation.
