This belt is used in dances by the Gelede society of Meko, a Yoruba town in the west of Nigeria. The Yoruba categorize colors into three main chromatic groupings, each of which has a temperature: funfun (cool) includes white and silver; pupa (hot) includes red, pink, yellow, and other colors Westerners consider warm; dúdú (warm) includes colors like black, purple, and green. Colors also have spiritual connotations, especially in beaded ceremonial garments, since deities are associated with the colors that reveal their temperament. So, the gbigbona gods who are hot and temperamental are evoked with pupa, while the lo wooro gods who are moderate are evoked with dúdú.
